The Society for the Welfare of Animals Protection (SWAP), Nigeria, took humane education to a higher level. This was achieved from a workshop organised for the SWAP Compassion Forum members in both government owned and privately owned secondary schools on the 23rd of February 2008 in Benin City.
The workshop which focused mainly on
humane attitudes to animals, awakening of
passion for animal welfare in the hearts
of the participants and the campaign for
the UDAW, was attended by a crowd of
SWAP Compassion Forum members and
dignitaries. Impressively, the event was
covered by the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Africa’s largest network. During the course of the event, SWAP noted her intentions to, through its Humane Education scheme, introduce humane education into the Nigerian educational curriculum for primary and secondary schools. Also SWAP explained that in due course of time, an animal welfare certificate programme will be organised for members of the SWAP Compassion Forum.
The high point of the event was the signing
of the UDAW by Dr. Andy Ehanire and the
officials of the NTA.
Some of the participants and dignitaries
who were interviewed by the NTA and SWAP
Crew, thanked SWAP for the initiative and urged for better regulations of pet ownership and animal welfare laws in Nigeria, setting up wildlife rescue centers and to develop a structural educational programme.
The events was on the same day, relayed in NTA local and nation-wide news.
