The animal welfare certificate programme is a series of 12 lessons and activities designed specifically for Animal kindness club members by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). It aims to give members a greater insight into the care and treatment of domestic and farm animals. The lessons are divided into 4 sections: Dogs, Cats, Farm Animals and Welfare Acts.

In each of the sections, the trainees learnt the basic needs of animals and how to provide for them. The idea was to also teach methods to recognize the common diseases which affect their animals, so that they can seek treatment before the symptoms become serious or even fatal. Many of these diseases can be averted by preventative medicines, through vaccinations such as rabies and also by deworming. The programme also taught ways to recognize behavioural changes

in animals which often indicates illness. For example, dogs and cats communicate that they are unwell by changing their postures and body language - they will learnt to read these signs. Finally, the programme will taught the advantages of sterilizing dogs and cats to prevent unwanted litters, plus the importance of playing with these animals in order to establish a bond between them and their owners.

The entire lessons for this programme was crash-run for 5days (Monday 5th through Friday 9th, April 2010) due to time and limited resource. However, the content of the programme was preserved such that at the end, the participants earned their SWAP Animal Welfare Certificate and we are confident that they, their club members and their animals will benefit from their increased knowledge.
