Physical Education in Our Schools

Physical Education is a vital part of our public education system. It is a key to improving a child’s confidence, brainpower and long-term health. One of the major goals of physical education is to prepare students to be active and healthy for a lifetime. Physical education should be an integral part of the total education of every child in Kindergarten through Grade 12.

Recognizing the importance of physical education at a young age promotes healthy habits throughout life. As modern life becomes more sedentary and specialized, particularly for those who live in cities, the importance of physical education increases. It is important that children understand the importance of Physical Education and good health in their lifestyle. Schools should also recognize the importance of physical education.

Physical Education Homeschooling Ideas

With all schools, one of the most exciting classes is P.E. or physical education.  So how do you have physical education with homeschooling?  There are actually all kinds of things that one could do.  Actually, your options are even greater than that of a traditional school setting.  You have more freedom with what you choose.  You don’t have to worry about the school’s policy on sports or the complications with their insurance.  So you have more of a variety that you can offer your child.

One option is to take your child to the park and play basketball.  Dribbling a basketball helps the child to develop hand-eye coordination.  Running back and forth on the court helps with their endurance.  You can download the rules of basketball and teach the rules to your child; helping them to understand that you have to follow the rules.

Why Today’s Physical Education Doesn’t Make the Grade

Setting the Scene: The first time I ever saw him present was in September, 1983. I had just completed my fifth year of teaching and was one of 200 or so teachers attending the Fall Physical Education Leadership Conference in Reidsville, North Carolina.

The last time I saw him present was 20 years later – the start of the 2003-2004 school year. This master teacher-presenter hadn’t changed much in 20 years; he still possessed his hyperactive high energy levels, his inspiring way of communicating to teachers, and his love for physical education.
